Turning portfolio strength into launch clarity
A successful launch is about making clear choices, aligning the organisation behind them, and ensuring that execution follows strategy
One experience that has shaped how I think about launch strategy was introducing a portfolio of respiratory medicines in asthma and COPD at a top 10 pharma company.
At the time, the marketplace was already crowded and many healthcare professionals felt that patient need was largely being met by existing treatment options. Yet the evidence told a more complex story: for many patients, asthma and COPD were still having a significant impact on daily life, symptoms, personal confidence and quality of life.
As a pharma marketing team, what made the launches particularly challenging was that we were not introducing a single new medicine: we were launching a portfolio of treatments into a therapy area where we already had established medicines and held a leadership position. That meant success depended on much more than creating differentiation – we needed absolute clarity about the role of each medicine: which patients it was for, why it mattered and how it fitted alongside the other treatment options.

That experience taught me the importance of portfolio-led launch thinking. When launching multiple medicines, or adding a new treatment into an existing portfolio, strategic choices have to be clear, brave and cross-functionally owned. Commercial and Medical teams need to be aligned from the start, so that every stakeholder interaction is consistent, credible and purposeful.
A successful launch is not just about strong messaging; it is about making clear choices, aligning the organisation behind them, and ensuring that execution follows strategy. This involves everything from how we communicate externally to how we invest behind each medicine according to the role it plays in the portfolio.
